Internet Marketing Myth #24 – Internet Marketing Gurus Help You When They Sell to You
This has got to be one of the biggest and dumbest Myths I frequently see online. The internet marketers who spout this stuff, don’t seem to understand what a business transaction is or who is really helping who when a business transaction takes place.
First of all, let’s make this point clear right up front. When you sell something to someone, no matter how much of a benefit someone might get from what you sold them, it’s called a business transaction and not ‘help’. ‘Selling’ and ‘Helping’ are two totally different words with totally different meanings.
Let’s say someone buys an ebook on how to make money on the internet. The buyer made the decision to buy the ebook. The buyer read the ebook. The buyer also followed all the instructions in the ebook. The seller did not buy the ebook for the buyer. The seller did not read the ebook to the seller. The seller also did not put into action the instructions from the ebook on behalf of the seller. The buyer helped themselves. They get (or at least should get) the credit for the results they reap, not the seller.
An internet marketing novice is responsible for their failure, but they are also the ones that make their own success, and when that’s the case, no internet marketing guru can take credit for that, no matter what they sell or who they sell it to.
A lot of internet marketing gurus will be the first to shout that they can’t be expected to take the blame for another person’s failure. On the other hand, way too many of them won’t have any trouble at all in taking the credit for the financial success that any of their past or present customers experience. Well, I’m sorry, but you can’t have it both ways. If a seller can’t be expected to take the blame for another person’s business failure, then they definitely can’t take credit for that person’s financial success.
Many people who are just beginning in their attempts to generate an income online also seem to think this way. They give way too much credit to a lot of the big name internet marketers, and don’t even give themselves or other budding internet entrepreneurs enough credit for making their own success. It’s kind of a shame really, because they aren’t recognizing the value of their own efforts, and they are just assuming that this seller or that seller is the person responsible for their financial success.
Internet marketers don’t help buyers. Internet marketers market. That’s why they are called internet marketers and not internet ‘helpers’. There is nothing wrong with being a seller, but lets not call a certain category of people something that they are not. The last time I looked up the word ‘help’ in the dictionary, it was defined as something that is given, not sold. The whole ‘big name guru helps beginner internet marketers by selling something to them’ is another one of those misunderstood internet marketing myths.
Help is not something you can charge for. You can’t sell help. That’s an oxy-moron. If someone pays someone else to do something for them, it’s not called help, it’s called ‘paying for services rendered’.
Help is also not an obligation, so that’s another reason why selling something to someone can’t be called help. if someone pays another person to do something for them, then the person they paid is obligated to make sure that what they were paid to do gets done, so this can’t be called help either. Help is something that you do for someone because you want to help, and not because you are obligated to do it.
In an effort to clarify what I have typed in this article, I will make one case in point by throwing a hypothetical situation out there for you to ponder, before I conclude this article.
If your house has no electrical power, and a neighbor comes over to you with a generator and supplies some electricity to your home, then you would probably say that your neighbor has helped you. On the other hand, if you get your electricity by paying the electric company for it (and who doesn’t?), then would you really say something like “the electric company helped me get electricity”? I don’t think so. It wouldn’t make any sense and it would sound really dumb, to say the least, but this is the very same logic that a lot of the internet marketing gurus seem to be using. Go figure!
